The most obvious stress point is the cooling system. Your engine works harder in warm weather, and the cooling system is what keeps operating temperatures within a safe range. A quick glance at the coolant reservoir level and the condition of the hoses—checking for cracks, bulges, or damp spots—can tell you a lot. If the coolant looks dirty or low, that is a sign to have a professional inspect the system. The same goes for the radiator cap; a worn seal can allow pressure to escape and lead to overheating.

Your battery also feels the heat. High temperatures accelerate chemical reactions inside it, which can shorten its lifespan and sometimes cause failure at the worst moment. A clean filter keeps the air conditioning system working efficiently. The engine air filter follows the same logic—if it looks dirty when held up to light, it’s time to swap it. Tires and Pressure: Handling the Heat

Warm weather naturally raises the air pressure inside your tires, but it also increases the rate at which air can escape through tiny imperfections. The best approach is to check pressures regularly, but always when the tires are cold—meaning the car has been parked for a few hours.

Belts are just as vulnerable to heat. A quick glance can reveal obvious trouble: deep cracks along the ribbed surface, frayed edges, or a shiny glazed look. With the engine off, press firmly on the longest span of a serpentine belt. It should feel taut, with only a modest amount of give. If it feels loose or slips easily, that is a job for your mechanic. Replacing a belt or adjusting tension usually requires the right tools and access points, so it is not a casual driveway task.
