Start With the Story the Bodywork Tells

Before you open the door or listen to the engine, give the car a slow, patient walk-around. The body panels often reveal more about a vehicle’s past than the odometer does. Look at the car in steady daylight, not under harsh parking-lot lights. Move a few steps back and check how light falls across the hood, fenders, and doors. If the paint seems slightly off from one panel to the next—too bright, too flat, or a hint of a different shade—that section may have been repainted after an accident or a rust repair.

Run your eye along the gaps between panels. They should be even and consistent. A door edge that sits proud of the fender, or a trunk lid that lines up poorly on one side, can be a sign of a shifted frame or a sloppy repair. Next, look for rust bubbles beneath the paint, especially along the bottom of the doors, around the wheel wells, and at the edge of the hood. Small blisters here often mean corrosion is working its way outward from underneath.

Check the trim and rubber seals around the windows and doors for overspray. If the black molding has tiny droplets of body-colored paint on it, the car was painted without proper masking—which suggests a budget job rather than careful work. A small magnet can help you detect thick body filler, since the magnet will pull less firmly over deep filler than over bare steel. Test along the lower rocker panels and the lower corners of the fenders, but skip this test around bumpers and other areas where plastic panels are common. None of these checks tell you everything, but they give you a useful sense of whether the car has been repaired well or merely patched over.

Tires and Wheels: More Than Just Tread

Before you even open the driver’s door, spend a few minutes on your knees beside each wheel. Tread depth matters, but how the tire wears tells a longer story. Run your palm across the tread surface. If the edges are worn noticeably smoother than the center, the tires may have been run underinflated for a long stretch. Wear concentrated in the middle band points to overinflation. Both conditions suggest the previous owner neglected routine pressure checks, which is worth noting. Also look at the inner and outer shoulders of each tire; uneven wear between the two edges can point to alignment issues.

Move your hand along the sidewall, feeling for cracks, cuts, or bulging. Small weather checks are common on older rubber, but a bulge is a structural weak spot and should be treated with serious caution. If the spare is accessible in the trunk or under the cargo floor, give it a quick look too; a flat, cracked spare is a common oversight.

Wheels collect brake dust as a normal part of driving—a grayish film on the face of the rim is nothing to worry about. However, look carefully at the inside of the wheel and the tire bead area. Fresh, dark fluid streaking down the inner barrel or pooled near the lug nuts is not just grime. It can indicate a leaking brake caliper or wheel cylinder, which would require professional attention before any test drive.

Finally, stand at one corner of the car and press down firmly on the fender, then release. The body should rise and settle once, then stop. If it continues to bounce two or three times, the shocks or struts are likely worn. Repeat the test on all four corners, listening for any creaks or groans from the suspension.

Look Underneath for Leaks and Corrosion

Before you even think about turning the key, take a moment to get down low. If the car has been sitting for a while, slide a clean piece of cardboard underneath the engine and transmission area, or simply study the pavement where it is parked. Give it a few minutes. You are not looking for a few drops of water from the air conditioner, which is normal. You are watching for new, bright fluid that stands out against the ground.

Pay attention to the color of anything you find:

  • Bright green or orange: Usually coolant, and a sign of a leak in the cooling system. It should not be pooling under the front of the car.
  • Red: This is often transmission fluid or power steering fluid. A small stain may be old, but a fresh, glossy puddle is a concern.
  • Dark brown or black: Likely engine oil. A little grime is expected on an older car, but a fresh drip or a wet pan underneath is a problem.

Next, get a flashlight and inspect the undercarriage itself. Look at the frame rails and the areas where the suspension bolts to the body. A light, dusty brown surface rust is common and usually harmless. What you want to avoid is rust that flakes away in your hand, or worse, rust that has eaten through the metal to create visible holes or scaling. That kind of corrosion weakens the structure and is expensive to address.

Finally, check the engine and transmission oil pans for an oily film or wet residue. A slow leak may not leave a puddle on your cardboard, but a heavy coating of dirt and oil clinging to the metal is a good clue that a gasket or seal is on its way out. This kind of work usually requires a professional mechanic, so factor that into your decision.

Check Fluid Levels and Condition Without Starting

Before you turn the key, take a few quiet minutes under the hood. This is one of the best ways to spot trouble early, and it costs nothing but a little time and a clean rag. Park the car on level ground, pop the hood, and let it sit for a few minutes if the engine has been running recently. You are looking for two things: correct levels and clean appearance.

Start with the engine oil dipstick. Pull it out, wipe it clean, push it all the way back in, then pull it out again for a true reading. The oil should look amber or light brown and feel smooth between your fingers. Dark oil is simply old, but milky or foamy oil is a different matter—that can point to coolant mixing into the oil, which often means a serious internal leak. Gritty oil is also a red flag, as it can signal excessive wear or dirt getting into the engine.

Next, check the coolant reservoir. It is usually a translucent plastic tank with level marks on the side. The fluid should sit near the indicated full line and look clear or lightly colored, not rusty or muddy. An oily film floating on top is another warning sign worth noting.

Finally, find the brake fluid reservoir, typically mounted near the firewall on the driver’s side. The fluid should be near the full line and look clear to light amber. If it looks dark, cloudy, or has particles floating in it, that suggests old or contaminated fluid.

  • Use a clean shop rag to wipe the dipstick and any caps before and after checking.
  • If a cap is hard to remove, do not force it—stop and ask the seller for assistance.
  • These checks are simple and safe, but if anything looks odd, leave diagnosis to a qualified mechanic.

Interior Clues: Wear, Odors, and Function

Before you even turn the key, settle into the driver’s seat and take a slow look around. The cabin tells a story about how the previous owner treated the car, and sometimes that story doesn’t match the number on the odometer. Start with the surfaces you touch every drive. Run your hand over the steering wheel’s rim and look at the pedals. Heavy, shiny wear on the brake or gas pedal, or a steering wheel that feels smooth and polished at the 9 and 3 positions, can hint at many more miles than the gauge shows.

Next, shift your attention to the ceilings and floors. Run your palm across the headliner for any soft, sagging spots. Press down on the carpets in the footwells, especially under the mats. Dampness, staining, or a persistent musty smell that lingers even with the windows up are warnings that deserve serious thought. These signs can point to a simple leak around a seal or, worse, past flood damage that could create electrical problems later.

Finally, check the details that get ignored during a quick glance:

  • Operate every switch, knob, and button—windows, locks, mirrors, and the horn. Do they all respond without hesitation?
  • Adjust the driver’s seat through its full range. Does it move smoothly and lock firmly into place?
  • Pull each seatbelt all the way out and let it retract. It should slide back without snagging.

These actions take only a few minutes, yet they reveal a great deal about overall care. A car that feels tight and dry inside, with controls that work as intended, is a far better starting point than one showing hidden wear or the faint smell of dampness.

The Underhood Wiring and Belt Check

Once the engine is completely off and cool, open the hood and take a steady look around. This is a visual inspection only, and it can tell you a lot about how the previous owner treated the car.

Start with the battery. Look at the terminals and the cable ends for heavy, crusty buildup. That blue-white or greenish corrosion is common, but a thick layer suggests the battery has been neglected for some time. Also, see if the cables feel loose on the posts. A snug connection is essential, but do not grab or wiggle wires if you are unsure what you are touching.

Move on to the belts and hoses. Belts should be free of deep cracks, frayed edges, or a shiny, glazed surface. Hoses should feel firm but slightly pliable. If a hose feels unusually soft, spongy, or bulges when you squeeze it gently, that is a caution sign. Avoid touching any hose while the engine is running or still warm.

Now, scan the wiring harnesses. Look for any areas where the protective loom is missing or where wires are exposed. Pay special attention to:

  • Signs of rodent chewing, such as small bite marks or scattered debris.
  • Melted or discolored insulation near the exhaust manifold or other hot parts.
  • Messy, uneven wraps of electrical tape that may point to previous homemade repairs.

Finally, check the air filter if you can open the housing easily. Pull it out and hold it to the light. If it is clogged with dirt, leaves, or grime, the owner likely skipped routine service. A clean filter is a small but reliable sign that scheduled maintenance was respected.

These checks are safe and require no tools. If you spot any serious wear, dripping fluids, or exposed wires, factor that into the negotiation or walk away. Anything beyond these observations, such as testing the battery’s charge or measuring belt tension, should be left to a mechanic.
